Ohio River Girls Basketball Quaker Valley

About Us - History

The Quaker Valley Girls Travel Basketball program was founded in 2007 by Sarah Trovato. While the program became Sarah's high school senior project, it started because of her experiences as a player on the varsity team. As a player on the girls varsity team, Sarah was "dissatisfied with Quaker Valley's losing record and lack of organizational structure" for girls basketball at that time. Sarah looked around at other successful programs and it became apparent that in order to be successful at the varsity level, the basketball program needed to have a feeder system to get girls playing and learning the sport earlier. In the first year only a sixth grade team was fielded. A generous donation from the Sewickley VFW allowed for uniforms and basketballs to be purchased and for the team to enter its first season in the Beaver League. Practices that first season were held on Sundays because that was the only gym time available. The following year a 5th grade team was added and a 4th grade team the year after that. Sarah took on coaching duties from 2007-2010 before heading off to the University of Michigan on a rowing scholarship. (While there Sarah was a three time recipient of the Michigan Athletic Achievement Award and twice named to the Big Ten Academic Honor Roll.) From the beginning Sarah's mother Julie helped drive the founding of the program, acting as administrator and coach. She continued to build the program serving in both capacities until 2013. In 2012 the Quaker Valley Girl's Varsity basketball team won its first section title since 1981. Many of the girls who played on that team began their basketball career in the girls travel program.

QUAKER VALLEY YOUTH TRAVEL BASKETBALL

Quaker Valley Elementary School Basketball is a youth program for girls in 4th, 5th and 6th grade.

Our hope is to have girls learn and grow as players and as part of a team and, if they should choose to, be ready for the next step in their basketball careers.

For many of the girls this is the first time they play for a team associated with their school. What comes with that is the responsibility to represent their team and school in the proper way, not just themselves and their family.

We strive to focus on the fundamentals and learning the basics of the game of basketball. While playing in a competitive league, what's most important to us is that we learn the game and work to continue to improve more so than wins and losses.

We emphasize being humble in victory and gracious in defeat while having fun along the way.

We summarize our mission with one simple statement: Work hard, play hard.

The Quaker Valley Girls Travel Basketball team plays in the Ohio River Girls Basketball League and for more information please check out website links below.
