Established in 2016, Gym Rat Performance Training embraces athletes of all ages, sports and ability levels and works to help them build confidence and physicality. Founded by Andrew Kurzawski (the former head women’s basketball coach at the Community College of Allegheny County and former assistant coach at Penn State Beaver, Carlow University and St. Vincent College),  certified personal trainer and professional strength and performance trainer), Gym Rat PT has now become a go to for elite athletes looking to take their performance to the next level in Western Pennsylvania.

What makes us different? 

Our programs are designed for elite level athletes by coaches who coach elite level athletes.  We have trained NCAA, USCAA and NAIA All Americans as well as athletes from NCAA D1, D2, D3 and NAIA programs. Why would you train with trainers who don’t know your sport and don’t have a track record in the sport?  Knowing how to lift weights and gain muscle is only one aspect of athletic excellence. Robert Southall Jr. - Head Trainer

Robert Southall Jr., graduated from West Liberty University in 2007. While finishing his degree in Exercise Physiology he also was a member of the WLU men's basketball team. With over 10 years of strength and conditioning and personal training experience, he has helped high school/professional athletes in sports such as: basketball, football, soccer, baseball and lacrosse as well as general population clients with goals such as: weight management, weight loss and gaining lean muscle. With his approach of keeping things simple, educating clients, and teaching them WHY they are doing what they are doing, he has helped countless individuals meet and exceed their goals.

In 2011 his expertise in the field of conditioning, strength training and nutrition, also benefited the finalists of The Subway WPXI-TV Weight Loss Challenge for which he served as the official trainer.

Robert is committed to seeing his clients grow as people/ athletes and will be with them through every step. He also understands that most limits are set by ourselves and is willing to help you bust through those. Robert is dedicated to showing clients that this is a lifestyle and not a short term fix or something you do right before a season.

The Next Level

How far do you wanna go? In 1994 Coach Tru started an inner city baseball team in Pittsburgh, Pa. This team was made up of 16 inner city baseball players on a little league team. The team had no home field, and played every game on the road. Despite all odds, the team managed to win the Mayor’s cup as the best little league baseball team in Pittsburgh, Pa. That game was played at the old Three Rivers Stadium, now known as PNC Park.

Coach Tru had a great vision to help teach baseball fundamentals to inner city youth, teach them how to overcome adversity, and teach them discipline most importantly. This brought out the best in all of the athletes. In 1995 the book titled “How far do you wanna go?” was created, telling the tale of what Coach Tru and the 16 inner city kids experienced during their championship run. All the road games, practicing near inner city gangs, the Duchess of York coming to attend a game from overseas and many more road blocks that made that season great. I am very proud to say that I was part of this team and all of the success. If you ever get a chance, buy a copy of the book and give it a read. You will be pleasantly surprised.
